Hybrid Escalades use 20 per cent less fuel than standard models, claims GM
What is it?
A hybrid version of Cadillac’s biggest beast, the very enormous Escalade. The idea of a hybridised attempt on fuel-saving seems absurd with a giant like this, but the principle is no different from Porsche’s equally contradictory bi-motor Cayenne - and GM got there first.

What is it?
Mercedes-Benz is making some big promises about its new SLK. This third-iteration two-seater, they say, represents a much larger evolutionary step forward than the second, and possesses greater sporting appeal than its predecessor.
What’s it like?
Dimensionally, the new roadster has grown: length is up by 31mm, width by 33mm and height by 5mm. Its rear-wheel drive chassis is a development of that used by the outgoing model, with the same 2430mm wheelbase but wider tracks.

Revisions to the suspension have left it with a supple, controlled ride
What is it?
Volkswagen set the tone for the new Passat at a group preview event, which took place on the night before the Paris motor show opened last October. Through varying degrees of pizzazz involving flames, exploding crates and mock pit garages emerged Lamborghinis, Skodas, Bentleys and Audis.
Then, accompanied by nothing more than a puff of dry ice, out pootled the 'new' Passat. "Look," they said. "Waft your foot beneath the bootlid and it automatically opens." Woo.

What is it?
Our first taste of a petrol version of the all-new Focus, powered by Ford's turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder Ecoboost engine.
Although this engine will be sold in the UK, not initially with the 180bhp power output tested here. For the time being the most powerful version offered to UK buyers has 148bhp.

What is it?
Renault’s electric charge will be spearheaded by the Zoe Z.E. model. A Clio-sized supermini – powered by electricity alone – the Zoe Z.E. will reach UK showrooms in Spring 2012.
This Zoe Preview model is the very same concept car that was shown at the 2010 Paris motor show, although its creator, Axel Breun, Renault’s Director of Show Cars and Concept Cars, admits that it’s 90 per cent representative of the production Zoe Z.E. that will silently be rolling out of Renault’s Flins plant in France this time next year.
